Tips for Your Child’s First Debit Card
Giving your child their first debit card is an important step. It’s a step toward their financial independence and sustainability. It provides added security for the parent, who can monitor the amount, type, and location of their child’s spending. But this step requires careful guidance from you. To ensure your child uses the card safely, here are some simple safety tips:
1
Basic education
Before you give your child the card, make sure they understand how it works. Explain that the card is linked to your Pago account and that every action the child takes with the card affects the account, even sending real-time notifications to the parent when the transaction is complete. They should be able to understand that every action they take is a charge that decreases the account balance.
2
Emphasize the importance of safety
Teach your child the importance and necessity of keeping their card and information safe. Emphasize that they should never share their PIN or card with any of their friends. Teach them to memorize their PIN carefully and not write it down in places where it can be seen by others.
3
Use Online Services Wisely
If your child has access to online or mobile banking services, make sure they understand how to use them safely. Instruct them on creating a strong, unique password and the importance of logging out after each session. Discuss the risks of using public Wi-Fi for banking activities and encourage them to use secure networks.
4
Set your own spending limits.
Through your Pago account, you can set spending limits. This not only helps them manage their money, but also protects your account from overspending. You are and always remain the person responsible for the actions your child takes with the card.
5
Regularly monitor your Pago account activity.
Regularly review account activity and we encourage you to do this (when you deem it appropriate) even with your child present. This teaches them how to recognize and read a bank statement and distinguish transactions. By seeing the transactions they have made themselves, you also help them understand their spending and make better financial decisions.
6
Yes to online shopping, but be careful!
Online shopping is convenient, but it can be dangerous if not done carefully. Teach your child to shop only on secure sites and to look for security features, such as “https” in the URL. He should also be taught to recognize the risks of storing card details on websites.
Please visit the advisory information on Pago.al on Card Security and Internet Security and try to pass this information on to your child, as much as possible.
7
Instant notification of lost/stolen cards
It is possible that the card is lost or stolen! Make sure your child knows the steps to take if their card is lost or stolen:
- He must immediately notify the parent, who monitors his Pago account.
- The parent immediately notifies Rubicon at +355 4 562 0560 or [email protected]
Even if your child loses their card PIN, please instruct them to notify you immediately, so that you can contact the Pago Team via the communication methods cited above.
8
Lead by Example
Remember that you are a role model with how you use your debit card. Children often learn by watching their parents, so set good habits! Teaching your child how to use a debit card responsibly is an essential step in their financial education. By following these safety tips, you can help them develop healthy financial habits that will serve them well into adulthood.
